The rising popularity of caravanning could create more than 1,000 new jobs in UK caravan parks, mainly in coastal areas, as additional staff are taken on to cope with demand.
NCC director-general John Lally said: ‘Bookings in UK holiday and touring parks are up by anything from 8% to 50%, as people choose ‘staycationing’, and opt for self-catering and value over euro Costa-lot holidays.’
VisitBritain’s UK Tourism Survey showed 11.4m holidays were taken in various types of caravan in 2007, and the NCC predicts this could rise by more than 20% to over 13.8m in 2009 if the growth continues.
The NCC said sales of new touring caravans and motorhomes were down but the second-hand market remains buoyant.
Speaking in advance of the National Boat, Caravan and Outdoor Show at the NEC on 17-22 February, Lally said: ‘There is widespread evidence that existing caravan owners are using their caravans more.’
He said caravans were appealing to holidaymakers as they enabled people to control costs, and were increasingly seen as ‘green’ options.
He added: ‘Caravans, motorhomes and caravan holiday homes have changed beyond recognition in the last decade.
‘Many parks can compete with the best, boasting extensive leisure facilities, high levels of service and are very family-orientated.’
Although some of the new jobs will be seasonal, many parks have extensive indoor facilities and are now open ten or 11 months of the year. |
